About the artist

Daniel Baxter & Lily

Daniel Baxter is a graduate of Parsons School of Design. He has over 20 years experience as a freelance illustrator. His work has appeared  in numerous national & International publications, children’s books, & ad campaigns. Some clients include the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Wahington Post, Time, Forbes, Chronicle Books, Little Brown, Harvard, Princeton & IBM.  He lives in the Hudson Valley with his 2 daughters. His dog, Lily (Jack Russell/Dachshund mix) is almost always by his side, especially at his drawing table.

Portrait Process:

Pets have better things to do than sit still in Dan’s studio for hours on end. So he uses photos as reference (multiple pics preferred). These photographs must be clear and sharp with accurate color and good detail. He also requires close-ups of the head to ensure accuracy. You can email images to Dan (danielbaxter@webjogger.net), or send them via traditional mail. If you live locally, Dan would be happy to set up a photo session for an additional fee. A few examples are posted below.

He works with charcoal, pastels, ink, colored pencils, markers & other mixed media. He uses beautiful hand-made papers. Please browse the gallery to view singular portraits, or drawings that capture multiple facets of your pet’s likeness & spirit.

Given his illustration background, Daniel welcomes the opportunity to add a unique narrative to each portrait. Whether it's highlighting an aspect of your pet's personality, or putting him/her into a specific context, Dan is open to ideas.

General turnaround time is 7-10 days
